Dickenson County is home to world-famous bluegrass musician, Ralph Stanley, who lives near McClure. Stanley was raised on Sandy Ridge where his mother, Lucy Stanley, taught him to play the five-string banjo clawhammer style in the old mountain way she had learned. In the 1940's Stanley, and his older brother Carter, who played the guitar, began playing professionally as the Stanley Brothers Band. In 1966 Carter died, but Ralph carried on the tradition of their special brand of Music.
This song, "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow" has been handed down from generation to generation in the mountains, and was taught to Ralph by his father, Lee Stanley.
It is difficult to describe the influence that Ralph Stanley has had on the world of music. It is even more difficult to describe what it is that makes Stanley's voice and music so special and unique. When he sings, he makes the song his own story. His voice fills the song with emotion and brings the lyrics to life.
What an honor it is to know that Dickenson County nurtured this famous artist, and to know he has spread the music of our land all over the world.
