Billy Gene Mullins and wife Myrtle, raised their family in Dickenson County, Virginia. Bill was a coal miner by profession, but he had been singing all of his life. As a youth, he and his sister, Anna Belle Mullins Puckett, joined their parents, Rev. Hie Mullins and Francis Dutton Mullins, to sing at revivals, funerals, festivals, and other community events. Billy Gene passed along the family traditions of mountain harmony style gospel to his family.

The family lost Billy Gene after a brief illness in 2000 and they lost sister Anna Belle when she passed suddenly in 1999. Though it has been difficult, the rest of the family have continued to carry on the singing traditions inherited from their ancestors. They are always looking for new opportunities present their music and carry on the ministry the family began so long ago.

You Can't Run was the last song recorded by Billy Gene Mullins before his death.
